Dates were the main food source for travellers using the extensive trading caravan
route from the Indus Valley of Pakistan across the Arabian and Saharan deserts to
the western coast of Africa.The high sugar content of the fruit delays decomposition extending its’ storage and as travellers ate the fruit, the seeds were thrown away, thus creating a scattering of date palms along the caravan routes.
